Wedding Party Cave, Naszály Hill

Pest · Ungern · Natural site

A whole wedding party fled into the cave and held the feast in the dark. Animal bones and potsherds still lay on the floor when it was dug.

High on the flank of Naszály hill opens the Násznép-barlang, the Wedding Party Cave, and its name carries two legends. One tells of a peasant's son and a lord's daughter who married in secret; when her father set off in pursuit the whole wedding party fled up here and stayed in the cave until he relented. The other says a bridal procession was hunted by Ottoman riders, took shelter in the mountain, and held the entire wedding feast inside in the dark. When archaeologists dug here in the early twentieth century they found potsherds and great quantities of animal bones on the floor — there must have been a considerable feast in this place, they wrote, and the earth itself confirmed the cave's name. The cave is reached only on foot, and the last stretch climbs steeply.
