Above Tahitótfalu, in the woods at the northern tip of Szentendre Island, stands the crag called Vörös-kő, the Red Rock. This was where the woodsman the villagers called Mihók used to go. When his son fell in the First World War he lost his mind, withdrew into the forest, and was seen wandering among the stones with his axe in his hand, talking to someone nobody else could see. His death did not end it. For generations villagers and hikers have described a gaunt figure with an axe stepping out of the undergrowth at dusk near the Red Rock, standing perfectly still and watching until you look away — and then he is gone. Others hear instead the steady bite of an axe into a trunk deeper in the woods, long after all logging has ceased. The villagers say Mihók never left the forest; he simply stopped answering.
