Two suitors sealed the girl behind the ballroom panelling and went out to duel for her. Neither of them came back alive to let her out.

Rathfarnham was built about 1583 for Archbishop Adam Loftus and remodelled into a Georgian showpiece in the eighteenth century. The house's best-known legend concerns a young woman two men were competing for. So that neither rival could reach her, they shut her away behind the panelling of the ballroom and went out to settle it with swords; the winner would return and set her free. Both died in the duel, and the space was not opened until building work more than a century later. Ever since she is said to walk the ballroom. Out in the grounds walks another shape: the retriever that in 1841 followed its master down through the ice of the pond and drowned with him. The castle is now a state museum, and the ballroom can be walked into.
