Killeen was raised about 1180 as one of a pair of castles set either side of the great road north; the other is Dunsany. It was for seven hundred years the seat of the Plunketts, Earls of Fingall, until fire gutted it on the night of 16 May 1981 and left it a shell for years. The legend attaches to one of the last earls: he appears about the house in a blue coat and powdered wig, always the same dress, and takes no notice of whoever sees him. The library has an unrest of its own, with sounds that have no source and furniture and fittings standing in new places when you come back. Restoration of the castle has been under way in recent years. During the shell years walkers and the curious saw the figure most often, in among the fire-blackened walls.
