Spike Island in Cork Harbour has been a monastery, a fortress and, for a time, the largest prison in the world. During the famine years of the 1840s and 50s over 2,000 convicts were held in Fort Mitchel at once, and more than a thousand of them died of disease and hardship. Many still lie in unmarked graves in the island's convict cemetery, and it is them the stories are about.
