In this medieval hill fort in Bundelkhand, an entire wedding procession descended into the cellars – and never came back up.

Garh Kundar in Niwari district crowns its rock in Bundelkhand and has watched over the region for centuries. The fort has five storeys, two of them underground, and that is where legend places its horror: a wedding party of fifty or sixty people is said to have gone down into the dark vaults and never been seen again. After the disappearance the entrances to the basement were sealed, and local goatherds insist that anyone who spends the night in the fort does not return. Villagers also point to the fort's strange optics – clearly visible from several kilometres away, it seems to dissolve the closer you get.
