Nahargarh Fort — Rajasthan · Indien · Fort

By night, Prince Nahar Singh's spirit tore down what the masons built by day – until the fort was given his name.

When the Maharaja of Jaipur began building a fort on the ridge above his city in the 1730s, the work kept failing: whatever was raised by day lay toppled the next morning, and workers spoke of voices and shattered tools. According to legend, the land belonged to the dead Rajput prince Nahar Singh Bhomia, whose spirit refused to yield. Only when a temple was raised in his honour inside the walls – and the fortress named after him – could the builders work in peace. His spirit is said to keep watch still: when an engineer died mysteriously during recent renovations, locals blamed Nahar Singh, and guards tell of footsteps and cold draughts in the empty chambers.
