Put the book back where it belongs – or Lady Metcalfe is said to breathe heavily down your neck.
India's National Library occupies the old Belvedere House in Alipore, once the residence of British governors-general. It is said to be haunted by Lady Metcalfe, wife of the 1830s governor-general, renowned for her fastidious love of books and order. Students and guards have reported footsteps in empty halls, whispers behind closed doors and sudden wafts of perfume – and anyone who leaves a book in the wrong place is said to feel her heavy breath on their neck. When workers in 2010 discovered a sealed, windowless chamber on the ground floor, the speculation gained fresh momentum.
