Rana Kumbha Palace
Rajasthan · Indien · Palace
In the palace ruins of Chittorgarh, where Queen Padmini and hundreds of women walked into the fire in 1303, a woman with a burnt face is said to beg visitors for help.
Rana Kumbha Palace is the oldest building inside the vast fort of Chittorgarh, and its cellars are tied to one of Rajasthan's darkest hours. When Sultan Alauddin Khilji besieged the fort in 1303, Queen Padmini and hundreds of Rajput women chose to burn themselves to death in jauhar rather than fall into enemy hands. Visitors still report cries and whimpers rising from the ruins, and a woman in royal dress with a scorched face who turns to them asking for help. Rana Kumbha himself, the ruler murdered by his own son, is also said to pass like a shadow through the pillared halls.
