In the desert canyon north of Tabas, jinn are said to hold court in the cliff-side tunnels – and young women to have been carried off into the dark.

Kal-e Jeni, the Valley of the Jinn, is a deep canyon near the village of Azmighan, some thirty kilometres north of the desert city of Tabas. Between its sheer rock walls run ancient tunnels and cave dwellings, the so-called houses of the Gabrs, carved by Zoroastrians in a distant past. Locals hold the valley to be the domain of the jinn: stories tell of whispers from the rock face, of hikers led astray by voices, and of young women carried off into the ravine's darkness in older times. To this day many in the area avoid entering the canyon alone after sunset.
