The Jinn Cemetery of Tis
Sistan-Baluchistan · Iran · Cemetery
The tombstones are too large for humans, say the villagers – and at night the jinn's laments for their dead can be heard.
Outside the two-thousand-year-old village of Tis near Chabahar, on the Gulf of Oman, lies an ancient burial ground locals call the cemetery of the jinn. The graves are hewn side by side straight into the bedrock, and the tombstones are so strangely large that villagers doubt humans rest there at all. Local belief holds that the jinn gather at the cemetery after nightfall to mourn their dead, and wailing is said to drift over the slabs in the dark. Whoever crosses the burial field at night is struck, so the legend goes, by the mourners' curse – and few dare approach after sunset.
