Mussomeli Castle

Sicilien · Italien · Castle

Three sisters walled in by their brother starved to death in the castle - in 'the chamber of the three women' they are said to lament still.

The Manfredonic castle clings dramatically to a lone crag outside Mussomeli in Sicily. Its darkest legend concerns the sisters Clotilde, Margherita and Costanza, walled into a chamber by their brother to protect their virtue while he went to war; the provisions ran out and the sisters starved to death - according to the tale they were found with their shoes gnawed to pieces. In 'le camere delle tre donne' their laments are said to be heard still, and since the 1970s castle caretakers have also reported sightings of the Spanish nobleman Don Guiscardo de la Portes. The castle is open to visitors and is one of the island's most storied places.
