Around Milan's mighty castle prowls the Black Lady – a veiled beauty who lures men into the darkness of Sempione Park.

The Sforza family's Renaissance fortress is Milan's grandest monument, but after nightfall very different stories are told here. In Sempione Park behind the castle, a woman dressed entirely in black with her face hidden by a veil is said to appear to lone men, luring them along paths only she knows. Some claim she is Bianca Maria di Challant, the notorious countess beheaded in the castle courtyard in 1526; others point to the witch Isabella da Lampugnano, burned in 1519. Other spectres of the Visconti and Sforza dynasties are also said to haunt the old walls.
