Palace of the Hanged Man, Porta Nolana
Neapel · Italien · Haunted house
A headless soldier walks up and down the stairwell. Sometimes the head rolls ahead of him, sometimes it dangles in a window.
The building on Corso Garibaldi just inside Porta Nolana is known to everyone in the quarter as the palace of the hanged man. Under Spanish viceregal rule between 1503 and 1707 a barracks stood here, and the figure that returns is said to be a soldier of the royal guard who lost his life in one of the era's many popular risings. For generations residents have described the same thing: a headless figure going up and down the staircase, sometimes among people on their way home, sometimes with the head rolling down the steps ahead of it. Others have seen it dangling in one of the windows as if on an invisible thread, or simply heard heavy military boots in an empty stairwell. The flats stood unlet for years for that reason, and the name stuck.
