Penne fell for a young woman who agreed to marry him on one condition — a palace of her own, finished by dawn. He called on Beelzebub and offered his soul in exchange, but added a clause: payment would fall due only if the devil could count the grains of wheat scattered across the courtyard. The house rose overnight. The devil counted in minutes, said his number aloud — and was five grains out. The pact collapsed, and ever since Naples has called the building 'o palazzo d'o diavulo, the devil's palace. The chequered facade of carved feathers and lava plays on the family name.
