Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, Pompei

Neapel · Italien · Church

The valley was called cursed and lawless. There Bartolo Longo heard a voice — he had once been ordained in a black mass.

In 1872 the lawyer Bartolo Longo came out to the Valle di Pompei, then a malarial plain with a bad name, half abandoned and avoided after dark. Behind him lay several years in the spiritualist circles of Naples and a period in which, by his own account, he had been ordained a priest in a blasphemous counter-mass, after which he was tormented by anxiety and by visions he described as pursuit. Out in the fields on 9 October of that year the thought is said to have come over him like a voice: whoever spreads the Rosary is saved. He began with a worn, nearly ruined image of the Madonna hauled out from Naples on a manure cart, and around it this vast pilgrimage church grew. Longo was canonised in 2025, and pilgrims still come every 8 May and 8 October.
