From the unfinished palace's empty windows over the sea, Anna Carafa's face is said to appear by the light of the full moon.

The never-completed baroque Palazzo Donn'Anna rises straight out of the sea at Posillipo in Naples, built in the 1640s for the vicereine Anna Carafa. The palace was abandoned when her husband fell from favour, and Anna died soon after, bitter and forsaken; dark tales grew around the ruin - of trysts that ended with lovers vanishing into the palace's cavities, and of guests who never left its parties. Passers-by claim that on full-moon nights pale faces, including Donn'Anna's own, appear in the gaping window openings. The palace is now private housing but remains one of Naples' most legend-laden silhouettes.
