A hoofprint sits in the brickwork on the basilica's left flank. Paduans call it the devil's mark — or the cobbler's, if you ask the sober ones.

The basilica Paduans simply call il Santo was raised over the tomb of Anthony of Padua and mixes Romanesque walls, Gothic buttresses and eight Byzantine domes with two minaret-like bell towers. On the left flank of the building sits an imprint in the brick that looks like a horse's hoof. Legend says it is the devil's mark, left when he tried to reach the saint's resting place and was hurled away. The sober explanation that circulates alongside it is that a cobbler kicked the wall while the mortar was still wet. The print is still there and pointed out to visitors, and from it the short Via Beato Luca Belludi runs on to the Prato della Valle and the tomb of Antenor.
