After Cesare Borgia's New Year's massacre of 1502, the souls of his strangled captains are said to still cry out from the fortress walls.

This Renaissance fortress on the Adriatic coast was the stage for one of Italian history's most infamous betrayals. On New Year's Eve 1502, Cesare Borgia lured his own captains here – among them Vitellozzo Vitelli and Oliverotto da Fermo – to a reconciliation dinner, then had them disarmed and strangled; the deed was admiringly described by Machiavelli. Ever since, the restless souls of the betrayed men are said to roam the fortress, crying out their rage at the injustice. Legends also tell of a prisoner walled up alive in a cell in the courtyard, and of the enigmatic inscriptions "Io Pre" and "Io Dux" recurring on the walls.
