Rom · Italien · Haunted house
On 11 May 1861 mattresses, plates and cutlery flew out of Doctor Tromba's house — and dissolved in mid-air before reaching the street.
Rome's most talked-about poltergeist case unfolded in the house at number 57. From 11 May 1861 the physician Tromba and his household reported that objects began to move on their own: mattresses lifted from the beds, plates and cutlery hurled across rooms and flung out of the windows — but according to witnesses they vanished in mid-air before reaching the cobbles. Crowds gathered outside for days, tenants moved out in panic, and the story ran in the Roman papers. The quarter around Via del Governo Vecchio and neighbouring Via dei Coronari has carried the reputation ever since: residents still speak of knocking inside the walls and of heavy furniture that shifts during the night.
