The ruin looks like a giant throne. When fire flickered inside it at night, Romans knew exactly who was sitting there holding court.

On the Via Nomentana stand the remains of the tomb of Elio Callistio, a freedman in the service of Emperor Hadrian. When the facade collapsed, the ruin took on its strange shape: an enormous chair with a back and armrests, turned toward the road. In the Middle Ages shepherds and wanderers sheltered inside and lit fires there, and anyone seeing the glow from a distance across the dark Campagna drew one conclusion — the devil himself sat in the chair, holding court. The name stuck, and parents forbade children to go near it after dark. Even now that the neighbourhood has grown up around the ruin, people speak of light in the opening and of birds that will not nest in the brickwork.
