Tintoretto's House (Casa del Tintoretto)
Venedig · Italien · House
A witch coaxed Marietta into hiding stolen hosts under the water trough. The animals knelt — and Tintoretto beat her until she turned into a cat.
The red house on the Fondamenta dei Mori was the home of the painter Jacopo Robusti, Tintoretto. Legend says a woman flattered his daughter Marietta with the promise that she could become like the Madonna if she stole consecrated hosts from church. The girl hid them in a box under the water trough in the garden, and the household animals began gathering there and kneeling down. Tintoretto grew suspicious and lay in wait. On the tenth day the woman came to collect her prize. The painter set on her with his stick, and after the first blows she turned into a cat, let out a cry no cat makes, and hurled herself in a black cloud straight through the wall. The hole was sealed with a relief of Hercules, still on the facade, set there to keep her from returning.
