Sotoportego de la Corte Nova

Giovanna painted the Madonna on the wall and the plague stopped in the archway. Venetians still step around the stone it turned red.
The plague of 1630 killed close to eighty thousand Venetians, yet tradition holds that nobody died in Corte Nova in Castello. A woman named Giovanna lived here and said the Madonna had appeared to her in a vision, telling her to paint an image of the Virgin with Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian and hang it in the sotoportego, the covered passage into the courtyard. The legend says the plague halted in front of that image and stained one stone in the pavement red. The painting is long gone, but the stone remains, and those who know the story walk around it. An inscription at the entrance orders the plague to flee, for the court is blessed by Mary, and four seventeenth-century paintings under the arch tell the whole episode.
