For years a red shadow in the gardens knocked people to the ground. It stopped only when Zolli's statue was raised behind Garibaldi.

At the entrance to the Biennale gardens in Castello stands Garibaldi in bronze — and just behind him a plain figure: Giuseppe Zolli, a Venetian born in 1838, a Garibaldino who had sworn to guard his general's back even after death. The legend begins in 1921, when a Venetian named Vinicio Salvi was gathering snails near the gardens and felt a shove in the back that knocked him down. All he saw was a red figure, almost a shadow, moving away. Nobody believed him until it happened again and again: a young couple, a fisherman who took a knock on the head, all describing the same red shadow. An old man is said to have finally recognised the face as Zolli's. Once the neighbourhood raised his statue behind Garibaldi, the red shadow was never seen again.
