The rejected Madonna was left standing among the cabbages — and began to glow at night. The church took its name from that kitchen garden.

The church in Cannaregio was originally dedicated to Saint Christopher. The legend of its renaming concerns a statue in soft stone, a Virgin and Child, carved by Giovanni De Santi on commission from the parish priest of Santa Maria Formosa. The client changed his mind while the work was under way, and the sculptor set the unfinished figure in his own kitchen garden. There, it is told, his wife noticed the statue giving off a strange glow at night. Word spread through the city and the garden became a place of pilgrimage; another version says the statue was dug up covered in fresh green leaves with a sweet scent around it. After several claimed miracles the bishop had her moved inside the church, and in 1414 the Council of Ten confirmed the new name: Madonna dell'Orto, Our Lady of the Garden.
