San Nicolò al Lido

A pitch-black galley full of screaming demons was steering straight for the city. An old fisherman rowed three strangers at it.
On 25 February 1341 a storm struck Venice and put the city under water. Out of that night came the lagoon's most repeated miracle. An old fisherman sheltering under the Ponte de la Paglia was asked by a dignified old man to row him to San Giorgio, where an armed warrior came aboard, and then here to San Nicolò on the Lido, where an aged bishop waited outside the abbey. When the three had him row out towards the sea, a pitch-black galley came at them, full of screaming demons and steered by Beelzebub himself, heading for the city. The passengers said a short prayer, lightning fell and drove the galley under. Ashore, Saint Mark gave the fisherman a ring as proof to show the doge.
