Shobak Castle

Ma'an · Jordanien · Fortress

On the Crusader castle's windswept hill, ghostly knights are said to still stand guard, and visitors hear footsteps in the underground passages.

The Crusader castle of Montreal, known today as Shobak, was raised in 1115 by King Baldwin I on a lonely hill along the pilgrim road south. It was besieged for nearly two years by Saladin's forces before falling in 1189 – a drawn-out ordeal of starvation that left its mark on local storytelling. Visitors and guards have told of armoured figures glimpsed on the ramparts at dusk, strange sounds from the castle's famous underground well shaft with its hundreds of steps, and the sense of being followed through the ruins. Bedouin in the area also speak of jinn dwelling in the rock-cut passages.
