Sendai's most feared bridge spans the Dragon's Mouth gorge, lined with barbed wire — and with stories of those who never made it across.

Yagiyama Bridge in Sendai hangs nearly seventy metres above the sheer Tatsunokuchi gorge, and as early as the 1930s, when it was still a suspension bridge, it drew so many of the despairing that a police box was set up at its foot. Well over a hundred people are estimated to have ended their lives here, and the railings have been raised again and again into today's tall fencing topped with barbed wire. Drivers tell of figures clinging to the fence in the headlights, handprints blooming on the windows, and a woman at the end of the bridge who is gone from the rear-view mirror. It is routinely named the most notorious haunted spot in all of Miyagi.
