Fort Jesus, Mombasa
Mombasa · Kenya · Fort
In the 16th-century Portuguese fort in Mombasa, the spirits of fallen soldiers and prisoners are said to walk the walls at night.
Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese in the 1590s and has since been besieged, stormed and passed between rulers time and again – most famously during the nearly three-year siege of 1696–1698, when thousands died within its walls. According to local tradition, the fort has never been rid of its dead: visitors and guards tell of battle cries in the dark, footsteps in empty passages and glimpses of soldiers on the ramparts. In Mombasa's Old Town, people have spoken for generations of the spirits that move around the fort at night. Today Fort Jesus is a World Heritage Site and museum – and the city's most talked-about haunted place.
