In the west gate of Angkor Wat stands eight-armed Ta Reach – the spirit Khmers regard as the mightiest guardian of the whole temple city.

Just inside the western gate of Angkor Wat stands a five-metre statue of Vishnu that Cambodians call Ta Reach. In popular belief he is the most powerful of the region's neak ta, the ancestral spirits who own and guard the temples and punish those who misbehave on sacred ground. Pilgrims from across the country bring incense, fruit and lotus flowers to the statue, and spirit mediums hold ceremonies in his name. When wishes are granted, the faithful return to thank the old guardian.
