Every new magistrate of Miryang was found dead at dawn – until one dared to hear out the murdered girl Arang's ghost and gave her justice.

Below the Yeongnamnu pavilion by the Miryang River stands Aranggak, the shrine of Korea's most famous avenging ghost. According to the sixteenth-century legend, Arang was the magistrate's beautiful daughter, lured out into the moonlight, assaulted by a clerk and murdered when she resisted, her body hidden in a bamboo thicket by the river. Afterwards her bloodied figure appeared to every newly appointed magistrate – and one after another they were found dead of fright at dawn. Only when a fearless official calmly listened to her grievance was the killer caught, and the hauntings ceased. Arang is honoured with rites at the shrine to this day, and her fate is said to echo in the folk song Miryang Arirang.
