For two decades an abandoned psychiatric hospital stood on a wooded hillside above Gonjiam in Gyeonggi Province, becoming South Korea's most infamous haunted ruin. Legend held that patients died one after another from unexplained causes, that the director was driven insane, and that the door to room 402 could never be opened. In reality the hospital closed in the 1990s for far more mundane reasons, yet urban explorers who crept through its moldy corridors swore they heard footsteps, screams and saw shadows – and CNN listed it among the seven freakiest places on the planet. The building was demolished in 2018, the same year the horror film Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum premiered, but the site and its reputation live on in Korean horror culture.
