The old Japanese colonial cobalt mine outside Gyeongsan became the scene of one of the Korean War's darkest episodes in the summer of 1950, when an estimated 3,500 civilians were executed and thrown down its vertical shafts. Over the years a dense web of legends grew around the mine: a neighbouring factory was plagued by unexplained fires until its owner took his own life, and later businesses on the site are said to have suffered one misfortune after another. Television shows and YouTube ghost hunters turned the place into one of the country's most talked-about haunts, to the deep grief of the victims' families. Today the mine is a memorial site and night-time thrill seekers are turned away by guards – the mountain holds real horror, not merely the supernatural kind.
