When the nocturnal procession of the dead passes through Triesenberg, you must step aside — whoever walks last in the train will soon die.

In the Walser village of Triesenberg, on the mountainside above the Rhine Valley, generations have told of the Nachtvolk, the Night Folk: a procession of the restless dead moving through the village at night. People heard the footsteps of many walkers in long file outside their houses, and a low murmuring like prayers drifting through the windows. Anyone who met the procession did well to step aside and let it pass, for the Night Folk were considered deadly — and the procession was said to foretell the next death in the village: whoever walked last in the line would soon die. The legend appears in Otto Seger's classic collection of Liechtenstein folk tales and is kept alive along the village's Walser legend trail.
