General's House
Central Province · Sri Lanka · House
An English lady, found dead in one of the rooms under unexplained circumstances, is said to haunt the general's old hill-country residence.
General's House in the highland town of Nuwara Eliya was built in the early 1900s as a holiday residence for the British General Officer Commanding in Ceylon, right next door to the venerable colonial Hill Club. According to tradition, an English woman was found dead in one of its rooms, and her death was never explained. Her ghost is said to walk the nineteen-room house ever since. Today it serves as a retreat for members of parliament, and overnight guests have reported footsteps and an uneasy presence in the night.
