Kaunas Castle, at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, is one of Lithuania's oldest stone castles, raised against the Teutonic Order in the 14th century. According to the best-known legend, Queen Bona Sforza kept an army at the castle that one day sank into the ground – where it still waits to rise again should Kaunas face peril. In older times townsfolk said that at night one could hear horses neighing, weapons clattering and soldiers talking beneath the earth. In the castle's cellar vaults today, the castle's own ghost is conjured with sound and video installations retelling the legend.
