The Secretariat (Ministers' Building)

Yangon · Myanmar · House

In the red colonial colossus where Aung San was assassinated in 1947, footsteps and cries are still said to echo down empty corridors.

The Secretariat, British Burma's vast administrative palace completed in 1902, fills an entire block of downtown Yangon. On 19 July 1947 independence hero Aung San and six of his ministers were gunned down here, and for decades afterwards the building stood largely empty and decaying. Guards and visitors have told of screams from deserted rooms, footsteps on the stairs and figures in colonial-era dress glimpsed behind the windows. The stories have made the weathered palace Yangon's most talked-about haunted building.
