Fort St Elmo
Valletta · Malta · Fort
In the chapel where the fort's last defenders were cut down in 1565, police dogs refused to enter — and the guards never went in alone.
Guarding the harbour mouth of Valletta, the fort bore the brunt of the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, when hundreds of knights and soldiers fell before the Ottomans finally stormed the walls. In St Anne's Chapel, one of the oldest structures inside the fort, the last defenders are said to have been slaughtered. During the years the fort housed the police, constables admitted that no one dared enter the chapel alone, and that police dogs would snarl wildly at dark, empty rooms yet refuse to cross the threshold. The bombings of the Second World War added their own dead, and visitors still report footsteps and figures in the casemates.
