The 1908 brick building on Plaza Río de Janeiro in Colonia Roma is nicknamed the House of the Witches - its conical turret and window placement suggest a witch's face beneath a pointed hat. It was home to Bárbara Guerrero, known as Pachita, a famous shaman who performed 'spiritual surgeries' with a knife and claimed to be guided by a spirit called Cuauhtémoc. Since her death in 1979, residents and passers-by have reported whispers in the stairwells, shadows dissolving into thin air and the sensation of being watched from the upper windows. The building remains one of Roma's most mythologized addresses.
