The House of the Hanged

Figures hang from the first-floor balcony that nobody put there — and a woman leads a small girl down the corridor.

The mansion at Donceles 66 was completed in 1756 and is known locally as the house of the hanged. The name comes from what staff have described: figures hanging from the first-floor balcony, and shadows of bodies swinging beneath the ceiling beams of the inner rooms. Employees of the publishing house that occupied the building for years also spoke of a woman walking the corridor holding a small girl by the hand, vanishing at the stairwell. During one restoration a workman is said to have played with what he took for ceiling decorations before he understood what he was looking at. Today the house holds bookshops, galleries and cafés, and visitors keep reporting the same two sights.
