The shadow of the murdered Andrés Suárez lingers on the staircase — and from a coffin in this house, knocking was once heard.

The tiled palace on Madero belonged to the Counts of the Valle de Orizaba and today shelters a café beneath its glass roof. Two stories made it notorious. The first concerns Andrés Suárez, an employee murdered inside the building; ever since, staff and diners alike have described a shadow gliding up the broad staircase towards the mezzanine, always in the same direction and never reaching the top. The second concerns the countess who fell ill during the cholera year of 1833. Her family believed her dead and carried the coffin to the convent of San Diego, but during the wake sounds were heard from inside the lid — she suffered from catalepsy. It is her name that gets whispered when guests claim something brushed past them on the stairs.
