La Contaduría Fort — Nayarit · Mexico · Fort

On moonless nights, a monk paces the ruined fort above the old harbour of San Blas.

On the Cerro de la Contaduría above the port town of San Blas stand the remains of the eighteenth-century fort of San Basilio, once the most important stronghold on Mexico's Pacific coast. During the War of Independence, the priest and insurgent leader José María Mercado died here, plunging down the hill's ravine — and it is his robed figure that is said to pace the ruins on moonless nights. Visitors on the road up report voices, footsteps and the clatter of hooves with no one in sight. Down by the water, the harbour keeps a ghost-ship legend of its own.
