The miner Roque hid a lump of silver from his workmates - the cave-in that punished him left his face in the rock.

The El Edén silver mine, opened in 1586, made Zacatecas one of New Spain's richest cities and is today a tourist mine with a museum deep beneath the town. Guides tell the legend of Roque, a greedy miner who found a great lump of silver and hid it so he would not have to share. When the lump vanished he began to blaspheme - and a cave-in buried him on the spot; his body was never recovered. In one of the mine walls visitors are shown his petrified face, helmet on and mouth agape, and whoever finds the silver is said to be doomed to take his place in the depths.
