La Soledad Cemetery
Estado de México · Mexico · Cemetery
A mist drifts across the old execution ground, said to carry the prayers and cries of the dead.
Toluca's great La Soledad cemetery opened in the late nineteenth century and holds the graves of governors, revolutionaries and forgotten townsfolk. Part of the grounds is said to have once served as an execution site, and visitors claim that on rainy evenings you can hear the prayers and laments of those once led out to face the firing squad. A bank of mist is said to drift along the cemetery paths carrying the voices with it, while shadows flicker among the tombs. The city now runs night tours retelling the graves' histories and legends.
