At Juan Soldado's grave, the executed soldier is said to still cry out his innocence.

In 1938, the young soldier Juan Castillo Morales — 'Juan Soldado' — was executed by firing squad for the murder of an eight-year-old girl, a guilt many in Tijuana never believed. Within days of his death, people claimed the stone at his grave 'bled' and that a voice could be heard proclaiming his innocence. His grave in Cemetery No. 1 grew into a shrine where thousands have since come to pray for protection, migrants bound for the border not least among them. At night, his restless spirit is said to still wander among the headstones.
