Kellie's Castle
Perak · Malaysia · Castle
The Scottish planter who never lived to see his dream castle finished is still said to walk its second-floor corridor.
In 1910 the Scotsman William Kellie-Smith began building a grand mansion with a lift and hidden tunnels for his family amid the rubber plantations of Perak. Work stopped when he died of pneumonia in Lisbon in 1926, and his wife and children left Malaya for good – the castle remained a half-finished stage set in the jungle. Visitors tell of Kellie-Smith's own figure in the second-floor corridor and of a ghostly child playing in his daughter Helen's old room. The castle ruin is a tourist attraction today, yet many guides refuse to linger after dark.
