Doorwerth Castle

A woman condemned to starve to death for her crime is said to still roam the halls of this castle on the Lower Rhine.
Kasteel Doorwerth is a medieval moated castle dating from the thirteenth century, set on the floodplains of the Nederrijn just outside Arnhem. Legend holds that a woman was once condemned to starve to death within its walls, and her restless spirit has never left. Doorwerth ranks among the most haunted castles in the Netherlands: in 2004 British ghost hunters filmed a white figure in the knights' hall while heat and vibration sensors registered unexplained readings. Today the castle is a museum, where visitors still report footsteps and cold draughts in empty rooms.
