Every hundredth year, on 24 July, the ghost of beautiful Helena is said to wail in this narrow alley off the Zeedijk.

The Spooksteeg – Ghost Alley – is a narrow passage off the Zeedijk in Amsterdam's oldest quarter, named after the city's most famous ghost. In the eighteenth century, the beautiful but cruel tanner's daughter Helena is said to have pushed her sister Dina into the tannery cellar out of jealousy and beaten her to death, then married her sister's sweetheart Wouter, confessing the deed only on her deathbed – whereupon her husband cursed her never to find peace. On 24 July 1753, chronicles tell, the Zeedijk was startled by horrific wailing, and the legend holds that Helena returns every hundredth year on that same date. The alley still bears her ghostly name.
