Beneath seven small mounds in the Mastbos, the charcoal burner's murder victims are said to rest – and the Heldreef lane is haunted after dark.

The Mastbos south of Breda is one of the oldest planted forests in the Netherlands, laid out in the sixteenth century with kilometre-long straight avenues. An old legend tells that a charcoal burner committed a sevenfold murder here and buried his victims in the forest, whereupon seven small mounds rose from the ground – De Zeven Heuveltjes, as the spot is still called. Along the nearby Heldreef, a lane whose name the folklorist Sinninghe linked to a heathen burial ground, black cats were said to haunt the dark. Today the forest is a popular walking area where the legend is told on site.
