Lady Inger of Austrått ruled Norway from this house – and Ibsen turned her into a woman who betrayed her country and carried her own son to the grave.

Austrått, at the mouth of the Trondheim fjord, was in the 1500s one of the most powerful private houses in the Nordics. Here lived Inger Ottesdatter Rømer, "Lady Inger of Austrått", widow of the royal councillor Nils Henriksson Gyldenløve and one of the country's richest landowners, who through the Reformation years pulled the strings between Norwegian and Danish nobles until her death in 1555. Her reputation grew darker than her deeds: in 1854 Henrik Ibsen made her the central figure of "Lady Inger of Ostrat", a drama of betrayal, hidden children and a mother who carries her own son's body into the hall. The manor burned to the ground in 1916 and was rebuilt; in the whitewashed courtyard, among heavy vaults and the old Renaissance chapel, history and Ibsen's fiction have never quite let go of one another.
